Description of what effects the edits/changes had on the original story/plot (opinion)

Some people may not consider them important to the story, but eyecatches can and often do enhance the show they are used with. The joke potential of a teacher mispronouncing the Kanji DOES shed some light on this unique character and their omission makes the North American release less than it could be.

And the logo change? It's not the end of the world, but why change a logo that is already in English/Roman letters at all? It only costs the production company extra money and adds ZERO value to the release. In fact, it just annoys people who prefer the video to be left as intact as possible. Add the audio change to match the unneeded logo change and you have a US production company that had way too much money or free time on their hands when they decided to make changes like these.

Detailed description of opening and ending changes

In the original episodes there were eyecatches for episodes 2+ that featured a Kanji character and Onizuka (the main character) reading them (the joke and insight into his character being that he MISREADS the Kaji). These were omitted from the North American release.

At the end of the opening, the original OP had the letters 'GTO' in a sans-serif font over a field of static. In TOKYOPOP's versions, they replace this with their own 'paint-spatter' GTO logo.

Also, the English AND the Japanese audio tracks were altered at the end of the opening to add a 'zoom-in' and 'clanking' effect to go along with the new animated logo.

What you can do to get the unedited version (import and domestic)
Write/contact:
  • Please write or otherwise contact TOKYOPOP and voice your opinion about the lack of eyecatches and logo replacement on GTO. Remember to be polite as possible and ask them to fix this omission on future discs of GTO and not to do it on other titles. Threatening or sending them flames will only get your message discarded.
