Sakura Madness: In response to my editing report and questions that arose in the animeondvd.com forum after news of the edits to Sakura Diaries and the possible multiple versions, David Williams of ADV has indicated that they would look into what happened.

Also in the animeondvd.com forum, Blue Pulse has done a little research and come up with the following information:

I received a copy of the now infamous Team ABCB fansub of the first four episodes in early 1998, subtitled off of LD. So apparently the LDs would have had to be released before then. Indeed, by visiting the CD Japan web pages, they list the six volumes of Sakura Tsuushin being released in a span of five months in mid 1997, beginning on 5/21/1997 and ending on 10/22/1997. You can view this information at: .... http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/ld-dvd/ld-anime.html The webpage where I saw the information about Sakura Tsuushin being aired on Japanese TV was at the time called "Kaicho's anime page". It has since been renamed to "Anihabara!", but thankfully archives of the older pages still exist. According to an archived page at: ..... http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Teahouse/1966/ce981107.htm Sakura Tsuushin(Diaries) began its television broadcast on November 9th, 1998.

So it does appear that the Japanese home video LD release was before the TV broadcast. Time will tell what information ADV comes up with from the Japanese licenser and what, if anything, they will be able to do.

Just a reminder since there appears to be some confusion: The video edits described in the Sakura Diaries editing report do NOT appear to have been done by ADV. Although we have not been able to confirm this yet, there may be two versions of Sakura Diaries that were released/shown in Japan.

ADV shoots themselves in the foot: Thanks to info from Andy Turner it has come to light that ADV's release of Sakura Diaries is *NOT* unedited and does contain changes from the Japanese home video release.

Question's about changes to Sakura Diaries have come up on RAAM and on animeondvd.com in the months leading up to ADV's release and were replied to by ADV employees that ADV did not make any edits to Sakura Diaries. Well, I'd like to know who did make these edits to this title then. Numerous video edits are visible between ADV's version and the Japanese home video release. I suspect that there might have been a TV edit made for this title and that is the version ADV used, but I can't confirm this yet. In any case, there is no reason to release an edited version on a home video release that carries a 17+ rating.

In addition to the glaring video edits/changes, the subtitle and dub scripts are also altered. The dub characters bear very little resemblance to the original characters.

Read the details in the editing report. Read it HERE or click the 'Full List' link to the left.

NEW EDITING REPORT! I have added an editing report for Ranma 1/2. Read it HERE or click the 'Full List' link to the left. It covers the rearranged episodes and the changes to the openings and closings made by Viz.

MEDIA BLASTERS dodges the bullet: A rumor from RAAM indicated that Media Blasters might be skipping 'bad' episodes of Rurouni Kenshin, but Chris Beveridge of animeondvd.com received word that that was incorrect information and that Media Blasters does not intend to skip any episodes. Well, that's one less editing report I have to write.

NEW EDITING REPORT! I have added an editing report for Magic Knight Rayearth. Read it HERE or click the 'Full List' link to the left. It mainly covers the missing previews, some cut recap segments, and the opening situation. Nothing major was cut.

I've revised the report format a bit so that the Full List (and future sub lists) will only show the Japanese/English names and a overall description of the changes. The rest of the info will be in the detailed report. After looking at how long the list was getting with only the reports I have so far, I decided that it would soon get unmanageable. The new Magic Knight Rayearth report is in the new format and the two 'B' reports have been revised in the new format. Please let me know what you think of the change by e-mailing me at web animeprime.com.

YES! Reports from Anime on DVD and DVDTalk are indicating that Buena Vista has decided to postpone the release of Princess Mononoke on DVD until they can put a Japanese language audio track on it, English subtitles, and possibly some extras. No word on an exact date, but this is definitely a good sign that anime fans can make a difference. I just hope it's not delayed until after a Japanese region 2 release, but it does appear that it will be a better product and worth the wait.

ADDITIONAL! I have received additional information from Tom Joseph that in addition to Science Ninja Squad Gatchaman being dubbed as Battle of the Planets it was also later redubbed into G-Force using another altered storyline and plot. I have a feeling these old shows are going to be hard to track down exact information due to their age and the fact that many of them aren't available on video. Read the updated version HERE or click the 'Full List' link to the left.

OOPS! I left off some information on the Battle Athletes Victory editing report. Thanks to Bernabe Apolinario for pointing out that there was a minor name change and also for reminding me about the MAJOR change to the dub dialog in episode 20. I knew about it from when someone pointed it out on the Anime on DVD forums, but I completely forgot about it when I was writing the editing report. Read the updated version HERE or click the 'Full List' link to the left.

OOPS AGAIN! It turns out that the 'gender change' of Zoltar in Battle of the Planets was incorrect. It turns out he/she was a mutant that could shift between male and female forms at will (no water required). So the North American version made the two forms brother and sister. Thanks to Mike Breen for pointing this out. Read the updated version HERE or click the 'Full List' link to the left.

A REQUEST: I won't be able to make Otakon or the San Diego Comic Con this year, but I'd like to spread the word abotu Kite and the No Editing Zone. If anyone would liek to volenteer to print out and distribute some flyers at either of these evetns, please e-mail me at web animeprime.com. The flyer page can be found HERE.

NEW EDITING REPORT! I have added an editing report for Battle Athletes Victory. Read it HERE or click the 'Full List' link to the left. It mainly covers the OP/ED/Previews being removed and the missing 'where are they now' segment (if anyone has a video clip of this or more detailed information about the contents, I'd love to see it).

NEW EDITING REPORT! To fill in some of the older edits (these things take time, folks), I have added an editing report for Science Ninja Squad Gatchaman (AKA Battle of the Planets in North America) based on information sent to me by Tom Joseph. Read it HERE or click the 'Full List' link to the left.

INFO NEEDED: Since it's going to be re-released on DVD soon, I'm looking for information on what edits were made to Space Cruiser Yamato when it was brought to North America as Star Blazers. It's been ages since I've seen Star Blazers and I've never seen the original, so I am in need of additional information about what cuts and changes (if any) were made. Please send any info you have to web animeprime.com. Thanks.

I added some additional links to the 'Full List' page to help you find titles if they are known by various titles (such as all the series that were heavily edited to make Robotech). In most cases, the summaries will be found under the name that they are best known as in North America to help people find those reports of interest to them faster.

I've made up a new banner for those of you who have expressed interest in spreading the word. Click the 'Site/Contact Info' link above for details.

I'm pleased to announce that the Uncut Kite Petition has passed the 1500 mark, probably in part due to the flyers I distributed at Anime Expo 2000. My thanks to all those who signed the petition. You can check the results on DVD Animania at http://www.wildcoast.org/cgi-bin/kite_pet.pl?display and if you haven't signed it yet, please do to let Media Blasters know you want to see a uncut as possible version of Kite.

I'd like to thank Chris Beveridge for mentioning the opening of the No Editing Zone on animeondvd.com. Page views have drastically increased thanks to visitors from Anime on DVD. Considering that Chris' success with his site was one of my inspirations for this site, I am pleased to welcome anime fans from there. Thanks again, Chris.

NEW EDITING REPORT! I have added an editing report for Fencer of Minerva based on information sent to me by David Seid. Read it HERE or click the 'Full List' link to the left. The cuts are minor, but are still undesirable.

Updated the information on the Dragon Ball Z editing report thanks to information provided by Rob Kuebler.

Added some info about the 'make-up' transformation cries on the Sailor Moon editing report thanks to feedback from Victoria Emperador.

Added DBZ Uncensored links to the Dragon Ball Z editing report and LINKS page. Added link to the Sailor Moon FAQs to the LINKS page as well.

Well, I'm back from Anime Expo 2000! I have compiled a full report (both in regards to editing of anime and to other matters at Anime Expo 2000). Some good news on the Escaflowne dub, some bad news (although it's somewhat good news) on uncut Kite, and some ugly news on the con in general. It was a tiring four days and I had fun, but there were some bad things about AX2000. Read the good, the bad, and the ugly details HERE.

NEW EDITING REPORT! I have added an editing report for La Blue Girl based on information gained at AX2000 (Megazone beat me to asking John O'Donnell the question about the reportedly removed scenes). Read it HERE or click the 'Full List' link to the left.

ERRATA: Fixed some info on the Sailor Moon editing report thanks to feedback from David Robb.
